How to Choose an Original Painting for Your Living Room

The living room is where your home introduces itself. A single original painting on the main wall can do more for that first impression than any piece of furniture. This guide walks you through choosing one that feels right — not just looks right.

Start with the wall, not the painting

Measure the wall you have in mind. A painting should occupy roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the wall width above a sofa or console. For most Indian living rooms, that lands between 24×36 in and 40×60 in. Anything smaller floats; anything larger crowds.

Let the room's mood lead the colour

If your room is warm — wood, beige, brass — a painting with cooler blues and greens creates contrast and calm. If your room is cool and modern — greys, whites, black — an acrylic and mixed media work with earthy ochres, reds, and gold leaf will anchor the space and add warmth.

Choose the subject that fits the feeling

Figurative works with people and companions add narrative and are conversation starters. Abstract works are quieter and let the room breathe. Nature and animal series feel grounding. Ask yourself: do I want this wall to speak, or to listen?

Hang it right

The centre of the painting should sit at eye-level — about 57 to 60 inches from the floor. Above a sofa, leave 8–10 inches between the top of the sofa and the bottom of the frame.

Buy original, not print

An original painting appreciates. A print does not. Every painting on this site is a one-of-a-kind original acrylic and mixed media work on canvas, signed by the artist, and shipped with a certificate of authenticity.
